Costs and Money in Bulgaria
The official currency in Bulgaria was the Lev, and then Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, where Bulgaria adopted the Euro currency. However, the Lev will not be totally phased-out till 2009 or 2010.
The exchange rate in Bulgaria is announced daily at 24-hour change bureaus throughout the country.
Bulgaria accepts all major credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, JCB, Diners Club, American Express, Airplus, and Access.
All major venues accept these cards, including hotels, restaurants, night clubs, shops, car rentals and change bureaus.
That being said, traveler’s checks are also a great form of money in Bulgaria. There are plenty of banks with convenient hours, and ATM machines at major public plazas.
