Christmas and New Years remain as the merriest and finest festivals of Bulgaria. This is when the Bulgarian “sourvakari” travels from house to house granting health and prosperity to all.
There’s also the “ladouvane” of Bulgaria. It’s a rich festival for young girls on New Years Day, and is widely celebrated throughout the country.

Midsummer Day is another popular festival in Bulgaria.

St. George’s Day in Bulgaria is linked with abundance and health, and associated with all these festivals is the Bulgarian tradition of “martenitsas” and rose-picking.

The 1st of March in Bulgaria marks the time to give one another martenitsas, which are small figurines made of red and white threads that symbolize the awakening brought about by spring, along with health and happiness for all in Bulgaria.
